agoraphobia

This piece was inspired by my daughter (as with many of my sculptures) and her move to Brooklyn, NY. The sculpture was first displayed in a gallery in Coeur d’Alene and was installed in a 4’, brighly lit cube with the front face of the cube open to the viewer. The intention was to give a sense of infinite space around the small sculpture. Opposite of this, was another installation of the same sculpture but in a very small box to symoblize claustrophobia.

I selected the position of the hand on the back of her neck and the slight in-turned position of her right foot to express a sense of anxiety or lonliness or uneasiness or timidity.

During the show I was paid the ultimate compliment when several people said that they “knew exactly how she was feeling.”

The display cube was constructed inside the gallery because it was too big to fit through the door and, consequently, it had to be destroyed to get it back out. The point was made.
