If you are the father of a daughter, you need no explanation. The position of the fulcrum (books) under the plank is a comment on the value of a daughter as it obviously contradicts the natural laws of gravity. The muted detail of the father (blurred, anonymous) juxtaposed against the hyper detail of the daughter illuminates the relative importance of each figure. The direction that the figures face is of course intentional and symbolizes how the daughter is unaware of the magnitude of her significance. This is a very personal piece but I hope the sentiment is universal.
